Set in the heart of Ireland is Mullingar. This traditional market town in the centre of Ireland has much to be admired. It is one-third of the Midlands Gateway and is easily accessible from any corner of this Fair Isle. Aside from the buzzing atmosphere, this quaint town flaunts some cultural gems. The Mullingar Arts Centre is a must see.

HOLIDAY HIGHLIGHTS

Belvedere House & Gardens   |   Kilbeggan Distillery    |   Mullingar   |   Irish National Stud

DAY ONE – Arrival

We depart from your home early and travel to Holyhead for our ferry crossing to Dublin.  Upon arrival re-join your coach and continue our journey across Ireland to Mullingar with comfort stops en route.

DAY TWO – Mullingar and Irish National Stud & Gardens

This morning we travel the short distance into Mullingar, where you have some free time to explore. Why not visit Mullingar Cathedral, relatively new, this Cathedral began construction in 1936 and was consecrated in 1949. It blends Gothic and Romanesque styles to create Cathedral’s stunning edifice. With many stained-glass windows, you can enjoy the artistry and history in rich ambience.

We then visit the Irish National Stud & Gardens. It is difficult to define what has made the Irish National Stud a birthplace of Champions. With over 300 foals each year taking their first steps at the Irish National Stud, to stallions who have won some of the most prestigious races in the world.

We have an included guided tour, and time for you to explore at leisure before we depart and return to our hotel.

Please note that the stud farm and gardens are outdoor experiences with some walking involved. Please dress appropriately.

DAY THREE – Kilbeggan Distillery Experience, Guided Tour and Tasting

Today we visit the Kilbeggan Distillery, where we will enjoy a full immersive experience at Ireland’s oldest licensed distillery.  The Kilbeggan Distilling Company has seen its share of trials and triumphs. Founded in 1757, the distillery spent the next 200 years making a whiskey beloved the world over. So, when tough times ground its gears to a halt, the town came together to save the whiskey that built the town. It wasn’t quick or easy, but they persevered. Today, every bottle produced stands as proof that the spirit of Kilbeggan never wavered.

DAY FOUR – Mullingar Belvedere House & Gardens

Our excursion today takes us to the beautiful Belvedere House Gardens and Park.

Belvedere House takes you back to a time of the rich and titled, lavish lifestyles and elegant luxury. A time when ‘upstairs’ landed gentry lived alongside ‘downstairs’ staff who kept the house in perfect order. It is a time capsule of a warring family, of cruelty and jealousy, but also of the celebration of the beautiful natural world and those who have worked to preserve it.

This magnificent estate includes a restored Georgian Villa dating to 1740 – home to Lord Belvedere or ‘The Wicked Earl’. The estate includes a beautiful Victorian Walled Garden featuring one of Ireland’s finest collections of rare and exotic plants. You will also enjoy the 18th Century parkland complete with Romantic Follies, including ‘The Jealous Wall’ which is the largest folly in Ireland.

This afternoon you have time to explore Mullingar a little more, before we return to our hotel.
