Irelands dramatic West Coast is the very edge of Europe, and this wonderful holiday takes in the dramatic scenery of the Cliffs of Moher, the remote Aran Island of Inis Mor, and Irelands medieval heritage past.
Bunratty Castle and Folk Park | Aran Island (Inis Mór) | Cliffs of Moher Cruise | The Burren Centre | Vandeleur Walled Gardens
We depart from your home and travel to Holyhead and our ferry crossing to Dublin and on to our hotel in Newmarket on Fergus.
Today after breakfast we make our way to Bunratty Castle and Folk Park, a window into Ireland's medieval and early 20th century past. From the 15th century medieval castle to Bunratty Folk Park which features over 30 buildings in a 'living' village and rural setting.
Farmhouses, village shops and streets are recreated as they would have appeared back in the early 1900's. Wander along an old-fashioned Irish village street, and meet a host of colourful village characters, eager to tell a tale, teach Gaelic language or play a tune or two. 2024 plans to be a very exciting year for Bunratty Castle and Folk Park as they launch several new and exciting additions and enhancements to the visitor experiences.
Today we travel along the Wild Atlantic Way to Doolin Pier where we board our ferry to Inis Mór arriving in just 35 minutes. On arrival on the largest of the Aran Islands, we embark on a minibus tour with a local guide. Having some of the most spectacular cliff coastline in Europe and home to over 50 monuments of Christian, pre-Christian and Celtic mythological heritage, we discover the fascinating history of this living outdoor museum. The highlight of our tour is a visit to Dun Aengus, a 2,000-year-old fort perched on the edge of a 300ft high cliff. (Sturdy footwear is recommended). This afternoon, we board our return ferry which includes a 1-hour cruise under the iconic Cliffs of Moher, which rise to a whopping height of over 700ft at their highest point.
Today for our first visit we head to The Burren Centre, one of the worlds most stunningly unique natural heritage regions; beginning of a journey through time. This is a region which was largely sculpted over the last two million years by glaciers, through the exposure and submergence of its landscape to ice, ocean and the plate movements of the earth. As such, the Burren is a treasure store for lovers of wildflowers and wildlife, geology, ancient history, cave systems and magnificent vistas recognised in its status as a UNESCO Geopark, featuring the largest expanse of limestone pavement in the world.
The magic of its stones is reflected in its name in Irish An Bhoireann, 'a stony place'.
Later we visit the hidden botanical gem of Vandeleur Walled Gardens, one of county Clares most beautiful botanical tributes to Irelands rich, natural history.
After breakfast this morning we leave our hotel and make our way back to Dublin and our ferry crossing and home.
