From our welcoming hotel in Clifden Galway, Discover the Irish delights of County Galway, Connemara National Park, Westport and Clifden on this wonderful tour to South Western Ireland
Kylemore Abbey | Live Sheep Herding Demo | Killary Cruise | Celtic Crystal Visitor Centre | Westport | Clifden
We depart from your home and travel to Holyhead and our crossing to Dublin, and then we will continue to our hotel arriving in time for dinner this evening.
We spend this morning at stunning Kylemore Abbey, the home of Benedictine nuns since 1920 and one of Irelands best loved attractions, set amongst the splendour of the Connemara landscape. The nuns have restored the abbey, gothic church and beautiful 6-acre Victorian walled garden, which is divided in two by a mountain stream. There is also a visitor experience that tells the story of the abbey through the generations. We have free time to explore and enjoy lunch in the stylish café.
In the afternoon, we travel north to the charming town of Westport, in County Mayo, on the glorious stretch of the Atlantic coastline at the mouth of Clew Bay. Its petite nature belies the fact that there are lots to do here.
Pop into Clew Bay Heritage Centre whilst you are here and learn more about this interesting town, (entrance not included), but its well worth a visit. It is run by volunteers and tells you about the towns history, how it developed over time and its important events in Westports history, such as the Famine and the 1916 Rising, and the impact they had on the town and surrounding area.
Today we start with a journey through the Connemara National Park to witness the dramatic scenery of the Twelve Bens (or pins) Mountain Range. We arrive at Glen Keen Farm to enjoy a sheep herding demonstration, followed by traditional Irish music and refreshments. Travelling on this afternoon, we arrive in Killary where we enjoy a delightful cruise of the Killary Fjords. We then drive back to Clifden taking in stunning scenery.
After breakfast we depart Clifden and make our way to the Celtic Crystal Visitor Centre in Molycullen. Learn about the history, meet the talented master craftsmen and watch them hand-cutting exquisite Celtic designs, such as the Claddagh, Shamrock and Celtic Knotwork, free-hand from memory on clear and colourful cased crystal.
This afternoon we make our way back to the hotel where you have time to explore Clifden, and relax before dinner this evening.
After breakfast this morning we leave our hotel and make our way back to Dublin and our ferry crossing home.
