On this wonderful holiday, we embrace the glittering lakes, picture book towns and soaring mountains of Austria’s Lake District (or Salzkammergut). We visit lakeside St Wolfgang, St Gilgen and Mondsee; enjoy two lake cruises and explore Salzburg, the city of Mozart and the ‘Sound of Music’. We also dabble in wartime history with a trip to Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest in Berchtesgaden.

(29) DAY ONE – Arrival and Overnight

We depart from your home and travel to Dover for our crossing to Calais. Once in France, you travel to your overnight hotel on the France/Germany border where we enjoy dinner this evening and relax.

 

(30) DAY TWO – Arrival in Austria

After breakfast we continue our journey and make our way to our hotel in Austria.  There is a welcome drink before dinner this evening

 

(31) DAY THREE – Lake Attersee

This morning we board our coach for the short journey to the village of Attersee on the shores of the lake of the same name. We then enjoy a short 50-minute circular cruise of the lake, with lovely views of the surrounding hills. After free time in Attersee for lunch and a wander, our coach takes us back to our hotel to enjoy a free afternoon making the most of our location and hotel facilities.

 

(1) DAY FOUR – Mondsee, St Gilgen and Lake Wolfgang

Today we travel to St Gilgen via Mondsee, to see the famous Sound of Music church, where we have the chance for a photo stop. On arrival in St Gilgen, we have free time to enjoy the Mozart’s village, before boarding our boat to cruise to the lakeside town of St Wolfgang. Here we are free to explore at leisure before we return to our hotel mid-afternoon.

 

(2) DAY FIVE – Salzburg

Today we visit charming Salzburg, the 1756 birthplace of Mozart and setting of the 1965 film, ‘The Sound of Music’. Spread beneath the 11th century Hohensalzburg Fortress, this Austrian city boasts a shop-filled old town, rich museums and a wealth of Baroque churches and squares. We may wish to visit Mozart’s birthplace, the composer’s childhood home-turned-museum, stroll the Mirabell Palace and Gardens, which starred in the ‘Do-Re-Mi’ scene of ‘The Sound of Music’, admire Salzburg Cathedral or ride a funicular to the Hohensalzburg for fantastic views over the city’s rooftops and surrounding mountains.

 

(3) DAY SIX - Berchtesgaden and the Eagle’s Nest

This morning, we travel to the mountain resort of Berchtesgaden and enjoy a guided tour of Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest, perched 6,000ft high on top of the Obersalzberg mountain. Since 1952, the building has been open to the public as a mountain top restaurant offering the most spectacular views across the region. Please note due to its unusually high elevation, the Eagle’s Nest is only accessible by special mountain buses running from Obersalzberg.

 

(4) DAY SEVEN - Departure and Overnight

This morning you travel back to our overnight hotel.

 

(5) DAY EIGHT – Departure

After breakfast this morning we make our way back to Calais and our crossing, and on arrival in Dover continue our journey home.
