Staying in the Queen of Welsh Resorts your holiday exploring Snowdonia and enjoying its little railways could not be more perfect.
Llanberis Lake Railway | Betws-y-Coed | Caernarfon | Porthmadog | Llandudno | Llangollen Railway
We depart from your home with our exclusive home pick-up service and travel to Llandudno, arriving at your hotel with plenty of time to relax and enjoy the town before dinner this evening.
This morning we visit Caernarfon, home to Waless most famous castle and an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Mighty Caernarfon Castle commands the lions share of attention, but the towns narrow streets and stylishly redeveloped waterfront also merit a visit. The castle, built in the 13th century by Edward I as a royal palace and military fortress, was at the core of a medieval walled town.
Enjoy a spot of lunch in Caernarfon ahead of our journey to Llanberis Lake Railway with its little steam engines that take you a five-mile return journey alongside Lake Padarn, right in the heart of Snowdonia.
The journey takes you past the 13th century Dolbadarn Castle, across possibly Britain's shortest river and past Llanberis' twin lakes. From Llanberis the train runs non-stop through the Padarn Country Park, joining the 1845 slate railway route to run along the shores of Lake Padarn to Penllyn, and giving stunning views of Snowdon, the highest peak in England and Wales.
After breakfast we have a wonderful rail experience as we head over to the Llangollen Railway. It is the Heritage Railway Line starting at Llangollen Station, located beside the Dee River Bridge, in Llangollen Town, then the journey continues for 10 miles upstream, following the River Dee to the town of Corwen. The Dee is classed as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) for its entire length.
The line, located within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), remains close to the waters of the river for most of its length, on the north bank at Llangollen Station, the river is crossed on to the south bank via the Dee Bridge, approximately one mile upstream from Llangollen.
This morning, we depart the hotel and head to the gateway of Snowdonia Betws-y-Coed. This magical setting has a distinctly Alpine feel, enhanced by the dense Gwydyr Forest surrounding the village. Take a stroll on one of the many trails around the village, and take in the fresh air, or enjoy the array of independent shops, cafés and galleries displaying talented Welsh artists work.
Later we visit Porthmadog, the harbour town situated on the Glaslyn Estuary, Porthmadog is rich in maritime history and has several craft shops and restaurants. In times gone by Porthmadog was a vital, and busy, shipping port for the international slate trade, brought down from Blaenau Ffestiniog. From here, after a wonderful time, we head home.
