HOLIDAY HIGHLIGHTS

Dumfries   |   Dumfries House  |  Logan Botanic Garden  |  Devil's Porridge Museum  |  Kirkcudbright  |  Gretna Green Blacksmiths Shop

DAY ONE – Arrival

We depart from your home and travel to Scotland arriving late afternoon you will have time to relax before dinner this evening.

DAY TWO – Dumfries House

Dumfries House, part of the The King's Foundation is set in 2,000 acres.  This stunning Estate and 18th-century house with its unrivalled collection of Chippendale furniture has something for everyone. Dumfries House combines the neoclassical architecture of Robert Adam with the furniture of Thomas Chippendale and leading 18th-century Scottish cabinet makers. We’ll step back into the late eighteenth century as we enjoy a guided tour of the house.

DAY THREE – Logan Botanic Garden and Kirkcudbright

This morning we visit Logan Botanic Garden. A visit to Logan will fascinate garden and plant enthusiasts and is also ideal for those who simply want to stroll in natural surroundings and enjoy the peace and quiet.

The Garden dates to 1869. Located on the south-western tip of Scotland, Logan enjoys an almost subtropical climate.  The Garden's avenues and borders feature a spectacular and colourful array of half-hardy perennials.  The Garden is warmed by the Gulf Stream which enables plants from Australia, New Zealand, South and Central America and Southern Africa to thrive.

On our return we visit Kirkcudbright where its streets have housed generations of creative artists, a tradition maintained today by a flourishing colony of painters and craftworkers. This has led to it being called “The Artists’ Town“. Other well-known features of the town are the pastel-coloured houses and wide streets and a wide selection of mainly family-owned shops.

DAY FOUR – The Devil’s Porridge Museum and Gretna Green Blacksmiths Shop

We travel this morning to Gretna Gretna, and The Devil’s Porridge Museum tells the story of HM Factory Gretna, the greatest munitions factory on earth in World War One, where the devil’s porridge (or cordite, an explosive) was mixed. There were 30,000 workers: 12,000 of them were women. Their contribution to the war effort helped women to achieve the vote.

We’ll then visit The Famous Blacksmith’s Shop at Gretna Green. The layout of the shopping features is charming, with quaint cottage-style buildings surrounding a courtyard and sculpture garden. Why not dive into the history of true love at the UK’s first attraction dedicated to love and marriage.
