Welcome to Torquay in Devon, on the English Riviera coast. Devon has an atmosphere all its own, from the iconic palm trees, gardens, cliff tops and coastlines all create a beautiful backdrop for a relaxing holiday at any time of the year.

DAY ONE – Arrival

We depart from your home and travel to Devon arriving late afternoon you will have time to relax before dinner this evening.

 

DAY TWO – Brixham

After a leisurely breakfast we travel along the coast to Brixham, where you have time to explore and enjoy the fishing town, with is fishing heritage and interesting harbour.  Why not visit the Golden Hind Museum Ship, then stop for refreshments in a café, before a wonder around the town, and perhaps some lunch. There’s plenty of seating around the harbour so you can watch the boats come and go and enjoy harbour activity. You can also visit the Brixham Heritage museum, housed in the old Brixham police station, Brixham Heritage Museum is intriguing place with a rich collection of exhibits relating to Brixham's fishing industry including many maritime models and other local archaeological finds relating to the Napoleonic fort at Berry Head.

Many people already know of Brixham as a traditional fishing town; however, few know the full extent that this little village has had on fishing communities around Britain and northern Europe. In the late 18th century, motivated by dwindling catches, Brixham fishermen and boat builders set about creating faster boats that could fish in deep water. The design they developed was then known as a 'Brixham Trawler' and was adopted for use around the world. It was a wooden sailing trawler, about 18-24 metres in length, with a long, straight keel. Its sleek underwater profile and tall rig gave it the speed fishermen needed to reach remote fishing grounds, towing a large trawl, and return home in relatively short time.

By the end of the 19th century there were more than 3000 sailing trawlers based at British ports, with a fleet of 400 at Brixham. You can still see the trawlers in Brixham today.

 

DAY THREE – Torquay

Today is your chance to explore Torquay; known as the ‘Queen of the English Riviera’ Torquay is one of England’s best loved resorts.  Explore the harbour, enjoy a stroll along the promenade or some retail therapy in the town centre, or you could just relax in and around the hotel and watch the world go by, the choice is yours.

 

DAY FOUR –Dartmouth and Totnes

This morning we’ll visit Dartmouth, The River Dart is busy with boats of all shapes and sizes, and the town hosts the Royal Naval College.  You have time to obtain lunch here before we make our way to  Totnes, a charming and historic town.

 

DAY FIVE – Sidmouth

Today we head the opposite way along the coast to Sidmouth. Hidden in plain view along the beautiful Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sidmouth is a seaside town like no other; sitting along an impressive coastline and surrounded by spectacular countryside. Whilst you are here why not visit Sidmouth’s town museum it is a haven for anyone wanting to find out more about the town’s history – covering the town’s heritage, the geological history of the Jurassic Coast.

Sidmouth has a host of famous literary connections, including JRR Tolkien who had a holiday home in the town and is said to have written part of Lord of the Rings there and poet Elizabeth Barrett lived in the town for several years. It even appeared in several novels under different names like Beatrix Potter’s The Tale of Little Pig Robinson and Thomas Hardy’s Wessex.

We’ll return to our hotel later today with time to relax before dinner this evening.

 

DAY SIX - Departure

After breakfast this morning we leave our hotel and make our journey home with comfort stops en route.
