HOLIDAY HIGHLIGHTS

Cotswolds Tour   |   Tintern Abbey   |   Symonds Yat   |   Chepstow   |   Castell Coch   |   Stratford-upon-Avon   |   Bath   |   Roman Baths

DAY ONE – Arrival

We depart from your home and travel to the Cotswolds where we take a tour through the beautiful villages and across the Cotswolds Hills to Gloucestershire and our hotel, arriving to a welcome mulled wine and mince pies while your luggage is taken to your room.  Time to relax before dinner this evening.

DAY TWO – Tintern Abbey and Symonds Yat

This morning we enjoy a scenic drive along the beautiful Wye Valley to Tintern, dominated by the spectacular remains of Tintern Abbey. We spend time exploring the Abbey’s remains before visiting the craft and antique shops. We then admire the views from Symonds Yat before returning to our hotel. Entertainment this evening.

DAY THREE – Chepstow and Castell Coch

This morning we visit Chepstow, the gateway to Wales - a picturesque border town situated at the southern end of the Wye Valley in an area of outstanding natural beauty.

The town is steeped in history and here you will find quaint cobbled streets, buildings that date back 1000 years, alleyways, and hidden gems. The word Chepstow derives from the old English 'chepe stowe', meaning a marketplace, and today the town boasts a wide variety of independent shops, cafés, restaurants, and pubs, offering unique products and delicious food & drink.

After lunch we’ll then make our way to Castell Coch. This fairy-tale castle was a plaything for the rich and powerful. Castell Coch, or the ‘Red Castle’, rises from the ancient beech woods of Fforest Fawr like a vision from a fairy tale. Yet these great towers with their unmistakable conical roofs only hint at the splendour within. Given free rein by the third Marquess of Bute, architect William Burges didn’t hold back. The highly decorated interiors and rich furnishings of Castell Coch make it a dazzling masterpiece of the High Victorian era.

But it’s no exotic folly. Underneath the mock-medieval trappings you can still trace the impressive remains of a 13th-century castle, once used as a hunting lodge by the ruthless Marcher lord Gilbert de Clare.

We’ll then return to our hotel, for dinner and entertainment this evening.

DAY FOUR – Bath and Roman Baths

Travelling south today we explore Bath. Built for pleasure and relaxation, beautiful Bath has been a wellbeing destination since Roman times. Bath’s compact, visitor-friendly centre is overflowing with places to eat and drink, plus some of the finest independent shops in Britain. Bath's stunning, honey-coloured Georgian architecture is straight from a Jane Austen novel; highlights include the iconic Royal Crescent and the majestic Circus.

We have included a visit to the Roman Baths. Constructed in around 70AD as a grand bathing and socialising complex, the Roman Baths is one of the best-preserved Roman remains in the world, where 1,170,000 litres of steaming spring water, reaching 46°C, still fills the bathing site every single day.

The Roman Baths is the site of extensive ruins and an interactive museum filled with many treasures and visual snippets that transport you back to Roman times and the lives of the Aquae Sulis people. Walk on ancient pavements as the Romans did 2,000 years ago and explore chambers historically housing changing rooms and tepid plunge pools.

We’ll then return to our hotel for dinner and entertainment this evening.

DAY FIVE – Departure and Stratford-upon-Avon

After breakfast this morning we leave our hotel and make our journey home, stopping at Stratford-upon-Avon before we continue our journey home.
