The beauty of the Durham Dales offers a nice contrast with historic Durham, stunning scenery, historic towns and more. The region has lots to offer no matter what time of year you visit. On this holiday we visit museums and visitor centres, take scenic railway rides, and explore historic towns - all connected with the world's first public railway to use steam locomotives (Stockton and Darlington Railway 1825).
Durham | Teesside Princess Cruise | Yarm & Preston Park | Beamish Museum | Durham Dales | Weardale Railway Journey | Head of Steam & Locomotion Visitor Centre
We depart from your home and travel north to Durham where tea and coffee await you on arrival, time to relax before dinner this evening.
Today we embark on a picturesque journey aboard the Teesside Princess, cruising through the tranquil countryside along the twists and turns of the River Tees until we reach Yarm. The highlight of the town is the beautiful railway viaduct towering above the River Tees and we enjoy a lunchtime stop here. In the afternoon, we'll stroll down a Victorian street in Preston Park, experiencing life as it was in 1895, stopping by the sweet shop, toy shop, and blacksmiths.
This morning, we journey north to Beamish - the world-famous living museum of the North. Here you can step back in time to life in North East England during the 1820s, 1900s, 1940s & 1950s. Next, we'll embark on a delightful journey through Weardale, one of the most dramatic Dales in the country. Well arrive in Stanhope to enjoy a scenic ride on the newly reopened Weardale Railway.
Leaving after breakfast, a guide will join us as we journey through railway history. We begin with a visit to Head of Steam, a newly restored centre commemorating 200 years since the first train set out in 1825. This momentous event led to the development of nearly 15,000 miles of passenger lines over the next 40 years. Next, we head to Shildon and Locomotion - the National Railway Experience and home to many famous locomotives, including the one that hauled the first passenger train.
After breakfast we leave our hotel and make our journey home with comfort stops en route.
