· Step back in time within ancient city walls of York.
We depart from your home and travel first to the Grade I listed Piece Hall in Halifax - a rare and precious thing, an architectural and cultural phenomenon which is absolutely unique. It is the sole survivor of the great eighteenth century northern cloth halls, a class of buildings which embodied the vital and dominant importance of the trade in hand woven textiles to the pre-industrial economy of the West Riding of Yorkshire, from the Middle Ages through to the early nineteenth century.
Dating from 1779, when it was built as a Cloth Hall for the trading of pieces of cloth (a 30 yard length of woven woollen fabric produced on a handloom), The Piece Hall was the most ambitious and prestigious of its type and now stands in splendid isolation as the only remaining example. It is one of Britains most outstanding Georgian buildings.
It is impossible to overstate the scale and importance of this trade, not just to the history of Halifax and the West Riding, but to the nation over some 800 years between the twelfth and eighteenth centuries.
You have time here to discover the heritage, shops and food & drink here before we continue our journey to Harrogate.
Today we have the day at leisure in Harrogate. This morning after a leisurely breakfast why not explore the town, and visit the iconic Octagonal Pump Room, a historical landmark where visitors drink sulphur water for its therapeutic benefits. Then perhaps enjoy the Valley Gardens, on a spring day its beautiful. Then visit the Montpellier Quarter emblematic of a traditional Victorian spa town and one of the best places for art, architecture and shopping in Harrogate. This afternoon we have a traditional Afternoon Tea in the hotel, with time them to relax before our dinner this evening.
Today we have a day out in York. A popular destination for a day excursion, but maybe you can enjoy York from a different perspective and visit the St Marys Abbey; once one of the most prosperous abbeys in Northern England, its remains lie in what are now the York Museum Gardens, to the west or York Minster. Why not also enjoy the Shambles, one of York's most famous landmarks and one of the best-preserved medieval shopping streets in Europe. With its cobbled streets and overhanging buildings, it is believed to have been the inspiration behind Diagon Alley from the movie adaptation of the Harry Potter series. Although none of the original shopfronts have survived from medieval times, some properties still have exterior wooden shelves, reminders of when cuts of meat were served from the open windows. The street was made narrow by design to keep the meat out of direct sunlight.
Today, the beautiful old buildings have been restored and now house cheerful cafés, quirky boutiques and even a coin & stamp dealer and the smells are rather more pleasant with aromas from the chocolate, fudge and sweet shops, clothes and accessories and gift shops.
Well then make our way back to our hotel, with time to relax before dinner this evening.
This morning after a leisurely breakfast we depart our hotel and make our journey home. First stopping in Knaresborough which is full of surprises, a warren of medieval streets and stone staircases that weave their way up and down. The town centre is perched on the cliffs above the River Nidd and the imposing railway viaduct across the Nidd Gorge offers an amazing view.
There are plenty of things to do in Knaresborough - the marketplace in the centre of the town and offers a great place to enjoy a cup of tea or something delicious and home baked. On a Wednesday stalls fill the marketplace offering tasty produce, whole foods, plants and flowers, as well as pretty much anything else you can imagine something to take home maybe?
At the base of the cliffs on which the town sits, you will find a delightful promenade that traps the sun in summer, with a coastal feel despite being more than 60 miles from the sea. You might even like to make your way to the Castle, which overlooks the town.
Well then rejoin our coach and make our journey home.
