Tuck into a delightful and delicious afternoon tea while listening to amusing stories from Cliffhanger’s very own Mr Selfridge. A green-fingered expert will guide you around one of England’s most important ornamental gardens at Compton Acres, where acclaimed Horticultural, Conservation and Restoration developments have created 10-acres of exceptional plant collections.

DAY ONE – Arrival

We depart from your home and travel to Bournemouth, arriving late afternoon.

 

DAY TWO – Compton Acres Head Gardener Tour

This morning we Indulge in an idyllic haven of 10-acres of ornamental gardens at Compton Acres. Your exclusive expert guided tour will unravel the construction, horticulture, conservation and renovation behind the 5 themed gardens, that now boast over 3000 plant species, some of which grow uniquely at Compton, all created on stunning Dorset heathland.

 

Indulge in a treat from the Gift Shop or Café, or take a piece of Compton Acres home with a purchase from the extensive on-site plant centre. We’ll then make our way back to Bournemouth where you will have time to explore or relax this afternoon.

 

Please note: Site contains some steep inclines and uneven paths. Guests with mobility issues should request an accessible trail map on arrival.

 

DAY THREE – Christchurch and Mr Selfridge Experience

Today we will make our way along the coast to Christchurch, where we have some time to explore this riverside town, where the coast, countryside and history combine in this historic Saxon town.

 

We’ll then take the short journey to Highcliffe, taking afternoon tea at Cliffhanger Restaurant and appreciate the life and fortunes of the innovator behind one of the world's greatest department stores. Hear tales from Mr Selfridge himself of how he rented Highcliffe castle for his family so they could live the high life, complete with grand dinner parties and gambling.

 

DAY FOUR – Athelhampton House & Gardens and Poole

This morning we will visit Athelhampton House & Gardens a relaxed and memorable visit in one of Dorset’s finest historic settings. With over twenty rooms to explore, a rich collection of antique furnishings and paintings, and more than 500 years of history, the house is fascinating.  The five acres of formal gardens include four walled gardens, the iconic yew pyramids of the Great Court, extensive herbaceous borders, pools, ponds, fountains, and an Edwardian kitchen garden, offering interest throughout the seasons.

We’ll then return make our way back toward Bournemouth, stopping at Poole for a time on the way, before returning to our hotel.

 

DAY FIVE – Departure

After breakfast this morning we depart our hotel, and make our journey home, with comfort stops en route.
