St. Edmundsbury Cathedral | Sutton Hoo | Lavenham | Aldeburgh | Helmingham Hall Gardens | Southwold
We depart from your home and travel to Ipswich in Suffolk, tea and coffee await you on arrival whilst your luggage is taken to your room.
After breakfast, we head to the thriving village of Lavenham, one of the best-preserved Medieval villages in the UK, boasting some 320 listed timber framed buildings. We enjoy a short visit exploring the pretty half-timbered villages shops, houses, and cafes before we make the short journey to Bury St Edmunds. To get a feel for this historic market town, we begin with a self-guided visit to St Edmundsbury Cathedral. Once we have finished enjoying the cathedral, we can spend some time in the beautiful adjacent Abbey Gardens and see the ruins of Bury St Edmunds Abbey, the site of a Benedictine monastery.
Today, we enjoy a guided tour at the world-famous Anglo-Saxon burial site of Sutton Hoo, the hauntingly beautiful 255-acre estate which is home to one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of all time.
We discover the story of the ship burial of an Anglo-Saxon king, explore the award-winning exhibition and the full-size reconstruction of the burial chamber. There is the Royal Burial Ground, High Hall exhibition, Tranmer House, Visitor Centre with shop and bookstore, and a Café serving lunch and snacks.
*Please Note: There are many things to see at Sutton Hoo, and you will be walking for over 1 and a half hours for the burial tour, and throughout the site. Our visit here will last for about 4-hours to enable you to see everything. For those with mobility issues, there are all-terrain wheelchairs available and mobility scooters, however, if you need one of these it MUST BE PRE-BOOKED when making your booking, otherwise we will not be able to guarantee one will be available on the day.
This afternoon we make the short journey to Aldeburgh, a charming and fashionable seaside town, once the home of composer Benjamin Britten. Located on Suffolks Heritage Coast, this delightful town with its pretty pebbled beach, offers a charming escape with its pastel-coloured holiday villas along part of the promenade. We can also enjoy the historic centre, museum (not included) and choice of boutiques or antique and art shops.
Morning visit to the beautiful seaside village of Southwold complete with its famous painted beach huts and lovely pier. We enjoy some free time to explore the pier, stroll along the beach, wander through the town and get an early lunch before we travel to Helmingham Hall Gardens for a visit to these historic gardens. Set rather spectacularly, surrounded by a sparkling moat and in its own manicured grounds and deer park, the approach is something to behold. The Tollemache family have lived in and repaired the hall itself since 1480 and to this day, it is still in their hands. Enjoy exploring the immaculate Grade I listed gardens at leisure.
After breakfast, this morning we leave our hotel and make our journey home with comfort stops enroute.
