Dalemain Historic Mansion | Penrith | Carlisle | Carlisle Castle | Grasmere Gingerbread Shop | The World of Beatrix Potter | Rydal Mount and Gardens | Keswick | Kendal
We depart from your home and travel towards Carlisle to stop at Carlisle Castle near the ruins of Hadrians Wall. This medieval fortress in England has witnessed many wars and sieges since 1092. Standing proud in the city for nine centuries. Youll have time to explore yourself. Carlisle Castle itself does not have a dedicated café within its grounds. However, there are several nearby options where you can enjoy a tea/coffee/snack. We then continue to Penrith and our hotel where you have time to relax before dinner this evening.
Today we explore our younger selves as we venture to Grasmere where we visit the Grasmere Gingerbread Shop where talks bring Cumbrias unique culinary history and the story of Sarah Nelson to life. You can also take a stroll around the village and maybe visit the 13th century St Oswalds church.
Well then make our way to Bowness-on-Windermere, where we include a visit to the World of Beatrix Potter, a themed visitor attraction set in the centre of Bowness-on-Windermere. Here you can discover Peter Rabbit, Jemima Puddle-Duck and all their friends in a magical indoor re-creation of Beatrix Potters little books, complete with the sights, sounds and smells of the countryside.
The outdoor Peter Rabbit Garden offers visitors a glimpse of the cabbages where Peter lost one of his shoes and the garden gate which he squeezed under as he tried to escape Mr. McGregor!
This morning we visit Rydal Mount Gardens. The house dates from the 16th century, although was enlarged over the intervening centuries, and even by Wordsworth himself. It contains a selection of the familys prized possessions and portraits. Wordsworth was a keen landscape gardener, and the five-acre garden remains very much as he designed it. It consists of fell-side terraces, rock pools and an ancient mound. Making our way back to the hotel, there is time for a stop in Keswick before our return and dinner this evening.
This morning we visit the historic mansion surrounded by beautiful gardens within a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is the site of The Dalemain World Marmalade Awards. Our Guided Tour will show us inside the house, where you will find a variety of interesting ceramics; beautiful furniture including work by Robert Gillow and Thomas Chippendale; and a good collection of family portraits by various well-known portraitists. There is one of the earliest examples of hand-painted Chinese wallpaper from the mid-18th Century. In the front hall, a cantilevered staircase.
This afternoon we travel to Carlisle where you will have time to explore. Why not visit the Old Town Hall in the heart of the city centre, dating back to 1668, or visit The Lanes Shopping Centre, or simply wander and admire the beautiful buildings.
After our day we return to our hotel for dinner this evening.
After breakfast this morning we leave our hotel and journey south to Kendal. Some time here before we continue our journey home.
