Ormskirk Market & Southport
We depart from your selected pick-up point and travel to the historic Market Town of Ormskirk, arriving around 11am. There has been a market in Ormskirk since 1286, it now has around 100 stalls so youre sure to find a bargain or two! We then continue our day and travel to Southport arriving at approximately 1pm, youll have time here to enjoy your day at leisure before departing for home at around 4pm.
Boasting a beautiful and expansive coastline, Southport is surrounded by natural beauty, making it a great place to escape. Take a stroll along the pier, Britains oldest surviving iron pier or maybe visit the Model Railway Village watch your favourite locomotive as it meanders around the 1.5 acres of beautiful miniature landscape.
Ormskirk Market is renowned for being one of the UKs oldest and most traditional outdoor markets. Granted a Royal Charter in 1286 by King Edward I, this popular and well-loved market has been held in Ormskirk ever since.
The town became known for its gingerbread over the years when local women would bake the gingerbread in their own homes and then take it to the staging inns to sell to passengers. When the railway arrived in the mid-19th century, the local gingerbread sellers found a new market. They were allowed to sell their product to passengers travelling through the railway station. One particular customer Edward, Prince of Wales, later Edward VII, enjoyed the local gingerbread so much he sent orders to the town.
