Oakham and Barnsdale Gardens | Rutland Water Cruise | Nene Valley Railway | Peterborough | Grimsthorpe Castle | Lincoln
We depart from your home and travel to Grantham arriving late afternoon you will have time to relax before dinner this evening.
Our first stop today is Oakham, county town of Rutland. Rutland is Englands smallest county and Oakhams stylish boutiques, and exclusive little gift shops are a delight. Later we head along the edge of Rutland Water to visit the famous Barnsdale Gardens, familiar to many TV viewers as the original home of Gardeners World.
The gardens comprise 38 individual gardens and features blended together by the borders into one eight-acre garden. From Barnsdale, we return to Rutland Water and enjoy a relaxing cruise on the Rutland Belle to round off the day.
Todays excursion takes us first for a ride on the Nene Valley Railway, which is a living heritage railway tended to by its loyal band of volunteers.. Afterwards, we head for Peterborough where we have time to look around the city, with its magnificent cathedral.
In the afternoon, we have the delight of visiting Grimsthorpe Castle. The castle was originally presented by Henry VIII as a wedding gift to Lord Willoughby de Eresby and his Spanish bride, Maria de Salinas, lady-in-waiting and confidante of Queen Katherine of Aragon. Ownership has remained in successive generations of the same family. The castle is centred around sweeping parkland, formal gardens and a 50-acre lake.
Today we drive to the historic city of Lincoln with its magnificent cathedral, and Norman Castle next door. The old town is a labyrinth of little alleyways and interesting shops to explore - with plenty of tea rooms for refreshments.
After breakfast this morning we leave our hotel for the last time, making our journey home with comfort stops en route.
