A lovely holiday exploring the attractions and interesting history of Leicestershire, including an afternoon cream tea cruise.
Bridgnorth | Shrewsbury | Belton House | Easton Walled Gardens | King Richard III | Leicester
We depart from your home and travel south firstly to Bridgnorth where you have time at leisure before we continue our journey to our hotel in Leicester arriving late afternoon. Time to relax before dinner this evening.
This morning we travel northwest and visit Belton House, an impressive National Trust property, often used for filming maybe you will recognise it.
Generations of the Brownlow family made their mark on Belton, commissioning the finest designers and craftsmen of their age to shape the estate you see today. The house and gardens showcase cutting edge design and innovation, from 17th century sash windows to a cast iron-framed orangery in the Italian Garden, made possible thanks to the Industrial Revolution. The interiors are equally impressive, with a dazzling collection of silver, porcelain, and a world-renowned library.
We then make our way to Easton, 450 years in the making. Nestled in a secluded valley, Easton Walled Gardens offer a pause from the pace of life, where renewal comes naturally. Saunter through the Gardens, sit and sip in the Applestore tearoom or shop in the Courtyard.
You will enjoy the scent, sights, and sound of an English garden before we then return to our hotel with time to relax before dinner this evening.
This morning we head into Leicester, this vibrant city is yours to explore.
The heart of the city is the shopping core. From the 800-year-old market which is one of the biggest in Europe to the independent boutiques, arcades and eateries of The Lanes and the multitude of stores and restaurants in the Highcross shopping complex, Leicesters sterling retail offers sprawls out in all directions from the iconic 146-year-old Clock Tower.
After lunch we explore the history of King Richard III. Following the discovery of remains in the car park in August 2012, Leicester City Council purchased an old school building with the aim of creating a centre that would tell the story of the remarkable search for and at that point unconfirmed discovery of King Richard III.
Today it is the King Richard III visitor centre, incredible transformation of the former Alderman Newtons School, located right next to the spot where the Kings remains were found. The stunning Victorian Gothic revival building was built partly on the site of the former Grey Friars Church and is in the heart of Leicesters Old Town.
There is plenty of opportunity for refreshments before we enjoy our Rutland Water Cruise this afternoon, with Afternoon Cream Tea.
After breakfast, this morning we leave our hotel and make our journey home calling at Shrewsbury on our way before continuing our journey.
