The Isle of Man has over 200 square miles of beautiful unspoilt countryside and coastline with little coves and superb beaches. Our base is the island capital Douglas, with its delightful promenade, Victorian pier, and specialist shops. With excursions to both north and south of the island, featuring three different Manx railways, not forgetting the ride up Snaefell, we feel this will be a very enjoyable and relaxing holiday.
The Great Laxey Wheel | Castletown | Douglas | Island Tour
We depart from your home and join your coach to travel to Heysham to connect with the afternoon sailing to the Isle of Man and on to your hotel in Douglas.
This morning we make our way to Laxley where we have free time before we visit The Great Laxey Wheel. Designed by the Victorian engineer Robert Casement, the Laxey Wheel was built in 1854 to pump water from Glen Mooar which was part of the Great Laxey Mines industrial complex.
Standing at over 72 feet high the wheel, which is also known as Lady Isabella, has been one of the Isle of Mans most popular tourist attractions for well over 150 years.
Youll have the opportunity to watch the wheel turning before attempting to climb to the top where youll be rewarded with panoramic views across the Glen Mooar Valley. Once back on solid ground you can walk through the valley to find the Great Laxey Mines learn about the lives of the miners, walk into the mine audit and take a trip on the Great Laxey Mines Railway which was once used to carry lead and zinc ores from deep inside the Great Laxey Mine.
Today we have a scenic tour of the southern part of the Isle of Man, where you will discover Port Erin, a popular destination since Victorian times thanks to a beautiful, sheltered bay and fine sandy beach, The Sound where you can admire the views across to the Calf of Man and spot seals in the surrounding waters and then onto Castletown. The former capital of the island, the castle dominates the town and there is an impressive selection of shops and restaurants in its narrow winding streets. Free time here before we make our way back to hotel for dinner this evening.
This morning we explore the north of the island, with its picturesque villages, and country lanes. Heading to Ramsey, before visiting Peel. Well then return to Douglas,
where you have the chance to spend the afternoon at leisure. Take a stroll along the promenade, browse through the shops or just sit and watch the world go by.
We depart out hotel and take the ferry Heysham, and we begin our journey home.
