Explore Scotland at its best during the Spring. Your holiday is based in the attractive grey stone and white harled town of Newtonmore, in the Heart of the Highlands. It is at the southern gateway to the Cairngorms National Park and a central location for the hit TV series “Monarch of the Glen”. We’ll explore the wildlife and history of the Highlands as well as the Highland’s capital.

HOLIDAY HIGHLIGHTS

· Explore Pitlochry

· Discover the beauty of the Cairngorms National Park

· Be captivated by the Capital of the Highlands - Inverness

· Enjoy the iconic Commando Memorial

· Spend time in Fort William

· Feed your curiosity at the West Highland Museum.

DAY ONE – Arrival

We depart from your home and travel north to Scotland with comfort stops en route. Arriving at our hotel before dinner this evening.

DAY TWO – Pitlochry and Cairngorms National Park

After a leisurely breakfast we’ll head this morning the short distance to Pitlochry, a thriving and busy town, with lots to explore.  We’ll make a stop at the Pitlochry Dam, Fish Ladder and Loch Faskally. The River Tummel was dammed between 1947 and 1952, as part of the Tummel-Garry Hydro Electrification scheme after WWII. This flooded the old Pitlochry Recreation ground where Pitlochry Highland Games were originally held and created Loch Faskally.

The scheme was very controversial at the time and suffered with floods and strikes throughout the 4-year building period. The Exhibition at the Visitor Centre has amazing photos and stories from the time and tells the legacy of the “Tunnel Tigers”. The Fish Ladder was built to enable migrating salmon up to their spawning grounds higher upriver and consists of 34 separate pools, each pool has a 1 metre opening below the water level to allow fish to swim upstream into the next level.

We’ll then take a tour of the Cairngorms, before heading back to our hotel with time to relax before dinner this evening.

DAY THREE – Inverness and Aviemore

Today we have a scenic drive to Inverness travelling through Aviemore before making our way further north to Inverness the largest city, and the cultural capital of the Highlands. Its old town features the 19th century Inverness Cathedral and an indoor Victorian Market offering a wide range and variety of top-quality products, in a wonderful Victorian style building.

DAY FOUR – Fort William and West Highland Museum

This morning we’ll travel west to Fort William passing by Loch Laggan and through Spean Bridge, calling at the iconic Commando Memorial before continuing our journey to Fort William.

Here we visit the West Highland Museum, where we have a self-guided tour. The museum is situated in the heart of the historic town, and the collection tells the story of the region and its history.

The most renowned and unusual collection relates to Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobite cause. But the museum also holds a wealth of curious and fascinating collections relating to less well-known aspects of the lives of the people of the West Highlands, from the effects of political warfare to the economic impact of tourism in the region, and the coming of the industrial and modern age. We later return to our hotel with time to relax before dinner this evening.
