A nostalgic holiday to Derbyshire, taking you back to times gone by as we adventure on the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway and explore the past at the Crich Tramway Village. With wonderful early summer gardens to explore this holiday has something for everyone.

HOLIDAY HIGHLIGHTS

Buxton   |   Biddulph Grange Garden   |   Crich Tramway Village   |   Lichfield   |   Ecclesbourne Valley Railway   |   Shugborough Estate   |   Bakewell

DAY ONE – Buxton and Arrival

We depart from your home and travel to Derbyshire visiting the Spa town of Buxton. Home of Buxton Water, this special thermal spa town is nestled in the centre of the beautiful Peak District, surrounded by the UK’s oldest National Park. Take a stroll in the ornamental gardens, visit Buxton Pavilion, or explore the history behind one of Buxton’s most iconic buildings, the Grade 1-listed Georgian Crescent. We’ll then make our way to our hotel.

DAY TWO – Lichfield and Shugborough Estate

We start the day with a drive south to the city of Lichfield. There is much to see and do - particularly the stunning Lichfield Cathedral, set in a remarkable and serene close. Over 800 years old, the building is the third on the site and is well worth a visit.

This afternoon we continue to the stunning Shugborough Estate, former home of the late Lord Patrick Lichfield. Set on the banks of the River Sow, the magnificent 17th-century mansion house provides beautiful historic interiors where you can view unusual treasures or experience life ‘below stairs’ in the servants’ quarters. You’ll also discover stunning formal gardens, peaceful woodland and parkland peppered with monuments and follies.

DAY THREE – Ecclesbourne Valley Railway, Matlock and Crich Tramway Village

This morning we head north to Duffield where we join the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway for a 30-minute ride through the Derbyshire countryside to Wirksworth. Rejoining the coach, we head for Matlock where we take a break for lunch and have a chance to look around. This afternoon we visit the superb Crich Tramway Village. The authentic period village scene transports you back in time with cobbled streets and the gentle rumble of passing trams. You’ll also find indoor exhibitions, shops, an ice cream parlour, tea rooms, and a Woodland Walk and Sculpture Trail. We’ll later return to your hotel with time to relax before dinner this evening.

DAY FOUR – Biddulph Grange Garden and Bakewell

Our first visit today takes us to the National Trust owned Biddulph Grange Garden. This is one of Britain’s most unusual gardens with upside-down trees, a formal Italian Garden, Egyptian Court, and a tranquil Chinese garden. A delightful experience! Later we journey to Bakewell, where we have time to explore this lovely peak District town before returning to our hotel.

DAY FIVE – Departure

After breakfast, this morning we leave our hotel and make our journey home with comfort stops enroute.
