A nostalgic holiday to Derbyshire, this new tour combines some of the best of Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Leicester into a fabulous experience, including a lunch cruise, a visit to the magnificent Belvoir Castle and all things transport in Crich!.
Buxton | Belvoir Castle | Crich Tramway Village & Tram | Southwell Workhouse | Great British Car Journey | River Trent Cruise | Nottingham | Guided Robin Hood-Nottingham themed tour | Bakewell
We depart from your home and travel to Derbyshire visiting the Spa town of Buxton. Home of Buxton Water, this special thermal spa town is nestled in the centre of the beautiful Peak District, surrounded by the UKs oldest National Park. Take a stroll in the ornamental gardens, visit Buxton Pavilion, or explore the history behind one of Buxtons most iconic buildings, the Grade 1-listed Georgian Crescent. Well then make our way to our hotel.
We start the day in Nottingham. Get under the skin of this fine city with a part walk/part step-on guided tour by Ezekial Bone, Nottinghams official outlaw, Robin Hood! We hear the truth behind the Robin Hood legend with masterful storytelling by our aptly dressed guide.
This afternoon we take to the water for a relaxing 3-hour cruise on the River Trent. As we sail, we tuck into a 2-course traditional roast lunch with tea and coffee, taking in the lovely scenery and superb views of the historic city.
This morning we visit Belvoir Castle, used as Windsor Castle in series 3 of the hugely successful Netflix series, The Crown. We embark on a guided tour of the castle and learn about the rare treasures and impressive painting collection as we walk in the footsteps of past Dukes and Duchesses. We have time to explore the choice of gardens including the Rose Garden, Japanese Woodland, Hermits Garden and Dukes Walk to mention but a few. In the afternoon, we return to Nottingham and visit Southwell Workhouse. It offers a fascinating vignette of how the poor lived as we explore the rooms, vegetable garden and yards and find out about the role of the workhouse and how it evolved through time.
We spend this morning at the fascinating Great British Car Journey, a car museum celebrating an era when British innovation was at the forefront of a transport revolution. We explore more than 130 vehicles as we discover the history of British motoring, from the legendary Austin 7 to the magnificent Mini and Metro. In the afternoon we visit Crich Tramway Village, a period village museum where we can enjoy travelling along the traditional village street on a vintage tram, viewing the exhibitions and marvelling at the spectacular views.
After breakfast, this morning we leave our hotel and first head to Bakewell where you have some time to explore before we rejoin the coach and make our journey home.
