HOLIDAY HIGHLIGHTS

Fonmon Castle   |   Llancaiach Fawr Manor Guided Tour    &   Afternoon Tea   |   Barry Island   |   Llanelli

DAY ONE – Arrival

We depart from your home and travel to Llanelli arriving late afternoon you will have time to relax before dinner this evening.

DAY TWO – Fonmon Castle and Barry Island

Today we can explore Fonmon Castle, the last residential castle in Wales. Created in the 12th Century it has been an important power centre for South Wales and the ancestral home for just two families.

You can enjoy the Castle and grounds which probably started life as a wooden fortress some time before the 10th century. The oldest part still standing is the Keep, built in 1180.  The hidden treasure is the Walled Kitchen Garden, and don’t miss the Great Hall, whilst you cast your eye over the opulence, imagine living in such splendour.

We’ll then visit Barry Island, where you can spend some free time, before we return to our hotel.

DAY THREE – Llancaiach Fawr Manor Guided Tour and Afternoon Tea

After a leisurely breakfast we visit Llancaiach Fawr Manor, and experience life in the 17th century, with a guided tour and afternoon tea.

Llancaiach Fawr Manor is surrounded by a restored period garden which provides the perfect opportunity to enjoy the passing of the seasons in this tranquil location. This superbly restored grade 1 listed gentry manor house is no ordinary heritage attraction. History here is tangible.

The costumed servants of the house are living and working in 1645 and allow you to share and engage in their world.

Fires crackle, candles flicker, Welsh wool clothing rustles and the sounds and smells of domestic life make your visit a memorable sensory experience of the past. It takes a moment to attune your ear to the unfamiliar speech within the Manor itself, but within seconds you become immersed in the time of the Civil Wars and the cares and concerns of ordinary people living in extraordinary times.

If you are very lucky, you might meet the master of the house, Edward Prichard. But he’s a busy man, much concerned with business and the Civil War and so he is often called away at short notice. Perhaps you might catch a glimpse of Mistress Mary Prichard, his wife… although she prefers to go and visit her family and friends at Briton Ferry, rather than brave the air of the valleys, as she is a rather “sickly” soul. Of course, being a devoted mother, she always takes their little daughters Jane and Mary, with her.

After our wonderful experience we’ll return to our hotel with plenty of time to relax before dinner this evening.

DAY FOUR – Departure

After breakfast we leave our hotel and make our journey home with comfort stops en route.
