Discover Devons wildlife sanctuaries dedicated to the preservation of otters and butterflies and sit back and enjoy a nostalgic train ride on the South Devon Railway, before visiting the 11th century Buckfast Abbey.

We depart from your home and travel to Devon, arriving late afternoon you will have time to relax before dinner this evening.
This morning, we enjoy a picturesque journey on the South Devon Railway, taking in stunning views of Dartmoor and the rolling Devon hills. Departing from Buckfastleighhome to a model shop, museum and award-winning gardenswe discover charming heritage stations and attractions at each stop along the way. With something for everyone, its a delightful day steeped in tradition and nostalgia.
Our day continues with a visit to the Dartmoor Otter Sanctuary and the Buckfast Butterfly Farm, conveniently located next to the car park. Here, you can marvel at tropical butterflies and learn more about three fascinating species of otters.
This morning, we visit Buckfast Abbey, an 11th-century abbey revitalised in the early 20th century and home to a community of Benedictine monks. We can explore the magnificent Abbey Church, stroll through the peaceful Sensory and Lavender Gardens, and gain insight into monastic life at the Exhibition Centre.
Afterwards, there will be free time to enjoy lunch at one of the Abbeys restaurants before returning to our hotel. Set close to Dartmoor National Park, the area offers the opportunity for a gentle scenic walk. We then return to the hotel with time to relax before dinner this evening.
Todays adventure takes us to Dartmoor for a full-day scenic drive, complete with commentary from knowledgeable Dartmoor guide Emma Cunis. With photo stops and short, easy walks throughout the day, the National Park is the largest and highest upland area in southern Britain. We will enjoy the stunning mosaic landscape with breathtaking views of majestic rocky crags, rolling hills, lush ancient woodlands, and shimmering rivers, with ever-changing beautiful flora and fauna. Highlights include Widecombe-in-the-Moor, Haytor, Chagford, Shapley, Postbridge, Princetown, Porkhill, and Sharpitor. Throughout this guided tour, well learn about geology, archaeology, flora and fauna, folklore, farming, and the National Parks Right to Roam. Emma will also share personal stories from her childhood growing up in this remarkable area.
After breakfast this morning we depart our hotel, and make our journey home, with comfort stops en route.

Set in the heart of the Dartmoor National Park overlooked by the famous Haytor Rock, the Moorland is the perfect base for nature lovers. Offering modern stylish guest rooms and public areas set within a traditional hotel, all visitors can expect a comfortable stay and a warm welcome. Guest rooms feature premium toiletries, Nespresso coffee machine and hairdryer. The Conservatory Restaurant with sweeping views of the garden features a range of tempting dishes, whilst the cosy bar with oak beams serves light bites, meals and a broad range of drinks including craft beers, local wines and cocktails. Please note there are some steps in some of the corridors and some rooms are only accessible by steps.
