After a leisurely breakfast this morning we travel north to Pitmedden Garden & Museum of Farming Life. This 17th-century walled garden contains over 30,000 bedding plants, 6 miles of clipped box hedging and over 200 fruit trees. The garden is split over three levels and at the heart of the property is a formal walled parterre garden filled with an array of colourful plants. The adjacent museum brings to life the agricultural heritage of the local area, where you can admire an extensive range of agricultural artefacts.
We then journey west to the village of Oldmeldrum for our lunchtime stop before making the short drive to Haddo House & Garden. Visit the delightful terrace garden with flower beds, lovely borders, and a fountain. A magnificent avenue of lime trees leads to adjacent Haddo Country Park, with lakes, monuments, and wildlife.
Today is free to explore Aberdeen at leisure. Aberdeen has a great maritime history with much to offer the visitor. The Duthie Park Gardens are well worth a visit and admission is free.
This morning, we travel through Aberdeenshire to the small town of Keith. We board a heritage train here for a return journey on the Whiskey Line to Dufftown. Originally opened in 1862, this line carried passengers and freight between distilleries across the region.
Later we journey to Barra Castle - a renowned berry growing farm. We will enjoy a guided tour of the fruit growing and learn about the fascinating history of the site itself including its involvement in the Battle of Inverurie in 1308 where Robert the Bruce defeated the Earl of Buchan. The tour is rounded off with some homemade ice cream that is created using the Barra Berries produced on the farm.
After our breakfast, we begin our journey home with comfort stops en route.
