DAY ONE - Arrival

We depart from your home and travel to Billington. Tea/coffee await you whilst your luggage is taken to your room, time to relax before dinner.

 

DAY TWO – Barrowfield Visitor Centre and Pendle Hill Country Tour

Today we have a full-day guided tour of Pendle Hill Country, hearing about the infamous witches. Downham was the setting for the 1961 film Whistle Down the Wind and TV’s Born and Bred. We call at Barrowford Visitor Centre for a break before heading over to Pendle Hill on our way to Clitheroe for a lunch break.

 

The day continues with a drive through Britain in Bloom village of Chipping and on into the Hodder Valley. We take a break at the riverside tearooms in Slaidburn before heading back to the hotel.

 

DAY THREE – Gawthorpe Hall and Riley Green Canal Cruise

Today the historic Gawthorpe Hall, an Elizabethan country house nestled in beautiful grounds. It was redesigned in the 1850s by Sir Charles Barry, architect of the Houses of Parliament and Highclere Castle where Downton Abbey was set. The modest Hall houses the North West’s largest collection of portraits on loan from the National Portrait Gallery as well as The Gawthorpe Textiles Collection, a wonderful collection of  textiles founded by Miss Rachel Kay-Shuttleworth.

 

This afternoon we have a short drive to Riley Green Marina. We join the boat for a relaxing and peaceful cruise along the canal, with afternoon tea served on the way.

 

DAY FOUR – Ribble Valley, Lancaster and Samlesbury Hall

This morning we begin with a ride along the Ribble Valley to Longridge and north to the city of Lancaster, with its historic castle. We have time to explore and obtain lunch. This afternoon we journey back making a stop at the magnificent Samlesbury Hall, a half-timbered medieval house built in 1325 in the traditional black and white. We enjoy a guided tour here before we continue back to the hotel.

 

DAY FIVE - Departure

This morning after breakfast we depart our hotel for our homeward journey with comfort stops en route.
