Yorkshires most important secular building.
The Grade I listed Piece Hall, Halifax is a rare and precious thing, an architectural and cultural phenomenon which is unique. It is the only remaining Georgian cloth hall in the world, the sole survivor of the great eighteenth century northern cloth halls, a class of buildings which embodied the vital and dominant importance of the trade in hand woven textiles to the pre-industrial economy of the West Riding of Yorkshire, from the Middle Ages through to the early nineteenth century.
Nestled within a dramatic landscape of rolling hills and wooded valleys at the centre of the West Yorkshire town of Halifax. With its honey-coloured architecture, rich industrial heritage and diverse cultural offer, this hidden gem makes a great day out.
It had fallen into such a state of disrepair that it narrowly escaped being condemned more than once. Thankfully, it was rescued with a £19m refurbishment and now is one of Yorkshire's greatest tourist attractions - filled with independent shops, boutiques, bars and restaurants with a wonderful atmosphere. It is quite a sight to see.
