Get into the festive spirit while exploring the unique history and heritage of this beautiful area of the Northeast of England. We visit two of the best attractions in the area, Beamish Living Museum and Bowes Museum something for everyone.
Durham | The Living Museum - Beamish | Bowes Museum
We depart from your home and travel to Durham arriving late afternoon you will have time to relax before dinner this evening.
This morning after a leisurely breakfast. What better way to count down to Christmas than by visiting the winter wonderland at Beamish, the Living Museum of the North. Experience Christmas from days gone by, Stroll around Town Street, Pit Village, Home Farm and Pockerley Old Hall. Lots of opportunity to obtain a drink and a bite to eat before returning to our hotel.
Today we continue our holiday with a day at leisure to experience the City of Durham Christmas Festival. The great loop of the River Wears wooded gorge provides a natural backdrop to its massive Cathedral and Castle. Downhill from the Castle you can trace Durhams mediaeval layout as you thread through the narrow winding streets and snickets. There is a wide range of shops, and the traditional Victorian indoor market will be augmented by traditional stalls, street theatre, jugglers and Victorian clad peddlers selling their wares. Away from the bustle you can stroll along wooded riverbanks offering a peaceful retreat below the peeling Cathedral bells.
After a leisurely breakfast we drive to the market town of Barnard Castle, where we visit Bowes Museum, just outside the town. This is one of County Durhams biggest surprises. Housed in a majestic French-style chateau, the Museum opened in 1892 and will amaze you with its superb collection including the amazing and beautiful Silver Swan. We have a chance to explore the festively decorated house. Outside the Bowes Museum Christmas Market is taking place where traders will be offering their festive treats. After our visit you will have time to explore the rest of the town. You can see where Dickens immortalised Dothboys Hall, look at Cromwells refuge, or browse round the antique shops.
After breakfast this morning we leave our hotel and make our journey home with comfort stops en route.
