With frosty days for coats and boots and the promise of changing seasons, winter is one of the best times to visit the Lake District. During this holiday we delve into the Lake Districts famous inhabitants, from Beatrix Potter to Wordsworth.

DAY ONE – Levens Hall and Arrival

We depart from your home and travel to Penrith, on the way we stop at Levens Hall, this stunning Elizabethan House, originally built around a 13th century Pele Tower offers a warm welcome, with fascinating history, find out how each generation has left their mark on the architectural fabric of the building and appreciate the magnificent interior with its fine oak panelling, ornate plasterwork, and beautiful collections of furniture, clocks and paintings. We then continue to our hotel where you have time to relax before dinner this evening.

 

DAY TWO – Grasmere Gingerbread Shop and The World of Beatrix Potter

Today we explore our younger selves as we venture to Grasmere where we visit the Grasmere Gingerbread Shop where talks bring Cumbria’s unique culinary history and the story of Sarah Nelson to life. You can also take a stroll around the village and maybe visit the 13^th century St Oswald’s church.

 

We’ll then make our way to Bowness-on-Windermere, where we include a visit to the World of Beatrix Potter, a themed visitor attraction set in the centre of Bowness-on-Windermere. Here you can discover Peter Rabbit, Jemima Puddle-Duck and all their friends in a magical indoor re-creation of Beatrix Potter‘s little books, complete with the sights, sounds and smells of the countryside.

 

The outdoor Peter Rabbit Garden offers visitors a glimpse of the cabbages where Peter lost one of his shoes and the garden gate which he squeezed under as he tried to escape Mr. McGregor!

 

DAY THREE –Rydal Mount Gardens and Keswick

This morning we visit Rydal Mount Gardens. The house dates from the 16th century, although was enlarged over the intervening centuries, and even by Wordsworth himself. It contains a selection of the family’s prized possessions and portraits. Wordsworth was a keen landscape gardener, and the five-acre garden remains very much as he designed it. It consists of fell-side terraces, rock pools and an ancient mound.  Making our way back to the hotel, there is time for a stop in Keswick before our return and dinner this evening.

 

DAY FOUR – Carlise Castle and Carlisle

Today we visit Carlisle, and it’s wonderful Castle, standing proud in the city for nine centuries. Whilst in Carlise you’ll have time to explore yourself.  Why not visit the Old Town Hall in the heart of the city centre, dating back to 1668. After our day we return to our hotel for dinner this evening.

 

DAY FIVE – Kendal and Departure

After breakfast this morning we leave our hotel and journey south to Kendal.  Some time here before we continue our journey home.
