DAY ONE – Arrival

We depart from your home and travel to Grantham arriving late afternoon you will have time to relax before dinner this evening.

 

DAY TWO – Lincoln Castle, Victorian Prison and Magna Carta

Today we visit Lincoln Castle where you will not only walk in the footsteps of Kings, but also see the impressive Victorian prison, the Medieval Wall Walk, and the Magna Carta Vault. The rest of the day is yours at leisure to enjoy the city and explore at your own pace.

 

DAY THREE – Burghley House

Our discoveries today take us to Burghley House. Burghley House was built between 1555 and 1587 by William Cecil, 1st Lord Burghley and principal adviser and Lord High Treasurer to Queen Elizabeth 1. With its dramatic skyline and towering obelisk clock tower, Burghley was built to impress and the State Rooms are simply awe-inspiring. Discover the enormous collection of historic paintings, ceramics and works of art, many of which still stand where they were first recorded in 1688.

 

Explore the original soaring Tudor kitchen and tour the magnificent State Rooms before descending the Hell Staircase painted by Antonio Verrio into the Great Hall, used as a grand banqueting hall in Elizabethan days. Discover the array of treasures awaiting you in each room - including the incredible art collection, unique examples of Chinese and Japanese porcelain and superb items of 18th century furniture. Our experienced tour guides will transport you back in time, bringing to life the intricate history of the Cecil family and the Collections they have built over 500 years of Burghley history.

 

Bursting with life, Burghley Gardens feature imaginative planting, sculpture and surprises sure to delight. Two spectacular gardens, each with their own distinct atmosphere and beauty.

 

Discover horticulture, sculpture and sensational seasonal colour as you stroll through the undulating landscape of our Sculpture Garden, Capability Brown's lost gardens.

 

Then step into a world of classical civilisation, astrology and astronomy in the highly entertaining Garden of Surprises. A sensory delight with the unexpected at every turn.

 

We’ll later return to Lincoln; you can choose to take some time in the centre or return to our hotel and relax before dinner this evening.

 

DAY FOUR – Gainsborough Old Hall, The Old Nick Police Museum

This morning we visit one of the best preserved, timbe -frames manor houses in the UK, dating back to the 15th century and found in the centre of Gainsborough.

 

Gainsborough Old Hall is a building that reflects over five hundred years of history in its walls. Experience the rich and varied past of a great English building and discover history through the voices of those who have lived, worked, and visited.

 

Uncover the draw jaw dropping spaces of the Great Hall before wandering winding corridors and up dead-end stairs. See how feasts were prepared in one of the best surviving medieval kitchens in the country and climb the 59 steps to the top.

 

After time for lunch, we’ll then visit the Old Nick Police Museum, the original Divisional Headquarters for the Lincolnshire Constabulary, and former Magistrates Court from 1860 to 1974.

 

The museum is dedicated to preserving and displaying the history of Lincolnshire Police and you can explore the cells, exercise yards and Victorian Charge Room. Learn about the many Lincolnshire murderers, their trials, and punishments; and see displays including the police telephone exchange, the original charge desk and many other fascinating items from the Lincolnshire Police Heritage Collection.

 

DAY FIVE – Museum of Lincolnshire Life and Departure

After breakfast this morning we leave our hotel for the last time, making our way to Lincoln where we visit the Museum of Lincolnshire Life.

 

This excellent museum focuses on all aspects of life in Lincolnshire in bygone eras, and really is a fascinating place. Located in a former barracks, you enter The Museum of Lincolnshire Life through an impressive set of wrought iron gates and into the gatehouse – adding to the sense of anticipation of what is to come. We then make our journey home with comfort stops en route.
