A wonderful day to discover some of the delights of Derbyshire.
Hathersage & Matlock
We depart from your selected pick-up point and travel northeast to Hathersage at the eastern end of the Hope Valley. With rich historical, industrial and literary associations, the picturesque village of Hathersage is brimming with character and has a great selection of shops, pubs, cafes and restaurants. Hathersage is famous for local literary links and legends; it inspired author Charlotte Bronte when writing Jane Eyre and nearby North Lees Hall was visited several times by the author in 1845, becoming the main inspiration for Thornfield Hall. In and around the village are also sites associated with the legend of Robin Hood his lieutenant, Little John is buried in the churchyard of St. Michaels.
After enjoying some free time in Hathersage, we then move on to Matlock, once famed for its hydro and spa treatments. Pioneering industrialist John Smedley developed the attractive market town as a fashionable spa in the 19th century. In the heart of Matlock sits Hall Leys Park with its boating lake and riverside walks. There are plenty of pretty streets full of small, independent shops, and a host of cafes, pubs and restaurants in which to relax.
We will leave at approx. 4.00pm to make our journey home, enjoying rolling countryside and unforgettable views as we travel through the Peak District National Park.
