This tour takes us to County Durham to watch Kynren - a live-action extravaganza. This mesmerising show takes you on a whistle stop tour of 2,000 years of history, myth, and legend. We visit Auckland Castle where we learn how County Durham was once ruled by the all-powerful Prince Bishops who were based here. The tour also includes the cathedral city of Durham, Barnard Castle, and Raby Castle - one of the finest remaining Medieval Castles in Britian.
Kynren | Durham | Raby Castle | Auckland Project All Access Pass - Mining Gallery, Faith Museum, Spanish Art Gallery, Auckland Tower, and Auckland Castle & Gardens
We depart from your home and travel to County Durham and arrive late afternoon at the Park Head Hotel, Bishop Auckland. Time to relax before dinner this evening.
After a leisurely breakfast, we journey to Raby Castle one of the finest Medieval castles to remain in Britain and the resident home of the Vane family since 1626.
Afterward, we make a lunchtime stop in Barnard Castle. In this little town you can see where Dickens immortalised Dothboys Hall, take a look at Cromwells refuge, browse around the antique shops or visit the castle itself, high above the River Tees.
After a leisurely breakfast, we make the short journey to Auckland Castle. This proud home of the Bishops of Durham stands as one of the best-preserved Bishops Palaces in Europe. Enjoy time at leisure to explore the castle with staterooms designed to tell the history and story of the bishops that lived here. Outside in the grounds, there is a 17th-century walled garden to explore with produce from the garden often incorporated into the menus at Park Head Hotel.
This afternoon we have included an all-access ticket to the other attractions in the town centre managed by The Auckland Project including the Mining Art Gallery, Spanish Art Gallery and Faith Museum. Last but not least, Auckland Tower gives 360-degree views of the castle, Bishop Auckland and the surrounding rural area. The choice is yours and you are free to explore at leisure.
We return to the hotel for an early dinner before we head to Kynren.
Taking place on a vast landscaped stage with a huge lake at its centre hiding a host of surprises, youll meet many of the characters and events that have shaped England. With scenes encompassing the Roman occupation through to World War II, history will unfold in front of your eyes. With a cast and crew of almost 1,500 performing on a vast open-air stage and stunning special effects, the scale of the show must be seen to be believed.
**PLEASE NOTE: Kynren is an outdoor show, so it is important that passengers bring appropriate clothing for the weather.
This morning we drive north to the historic city of Durham, well known for its huge cathedral, overlooking the rest of the river and its beautiful cityscape. Maybe enjoy a stroll along the riverside and obtain lunch in one of many cosy city cafes. A must-visit is Durham cathedral itself with its great architecture and peaceful surroundings.
