Blankenberge has many Art Nouveau buildings, seafood restaurants and boasts Belgiums only pier.
Belgium Coast | Ostend | Blankenberge | In Flanders Field Museum | Flanders Battlefield Tour | Last Post Ceremony | Ypres | Bruges Canal Cruise | Bruges
We depart from your home and travel to Dover and make our crossing to Calais and onto our hotel in Belgium.
This morning we travel to Blankenberge with free time to explore the town and see the many Art Nouveau buildings. Take a stroll along the promenade that runs alongside the vast sandy beach and explore the marina and Belgiums only pier.
This afternoon we return to cosmopolitan Ostend, with 9km of wide sandy beach and a spacious promenade. Perhaps call in at the former home of impressionist painter James Ensor. Now a museum, the ground floor is presented as a 19th-century souvenir shop. Along the coast, there are more than 60 World War 1 bunkers, observation posts and artillery positions: the remains of the German Atlantikwall.
Today we visit Ypres In Flanders Fields. Located in the imposing Cloth Hall, this interactive museum looks at the story of WWI through the eyes of those who were involved. You can enjoy an afternoon on the guided tour of the 14-18 Route with visits to sites and memorials including Tyne Cot and Langemark cemeteries. We have an early dinner in Ypres today, enjoying a local Flemish meal before witnessing the emotional Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate which takes place at 8pm each evening. Although this is under renovation currently and they have moved the ceremony close by to commemorate.
Today we visit Bruges, this famous medieval town well worth a visit. Often dubbed the Venice of the North. We enjoy a canal cruise whilst here so you can really get a feel for the beautiful architecture. You will then have free time to explore at your leisure before we return to our hotel.
After breakfast we leave our hotel and make our way back to Calais for our ferry crossing to Dover and our journey home with comfort stops en route.
