The annual Matlock Bath Illuminations is a fun-packed event featuring a spectacular river parade of illuminated floats that cruise along the River Derwent. The brightly lit models are mounted on rowing boats and proudly displayed to the crowds, providing a unique display. Previous floats have featured impressive racing cars, a fire engine, camper van and a Dalek and a Tardis, among other things!
Matlock Bath Illuminations | Buxton | Chesterfield | Bakewell
We depart from your home and travel to the outskirts of Derby and our hotel. On the way well visit Buxton in Derbyshire, home of Buxton Water. Buxton is a thermal spa town nestled in the centre of the beautiful Peak District and the UKs oldest National Park; its stunning ornamental gardens and world-famous Georgian and Victorian architecture, provide an impressive backdrop for our visit. We then make our way to our hotel with time to relax before dinner.
This morning we head out to Chesterfield, can you find out how the 'Crooked Spire' got its twist? You can get a taste of history of the area at Chesterfield Museum or simply browse the shops and the historic town. Enjoy lunch in one of the many restaurants before we make our way back to the hotel leaving time to relax this afternoon prior to an early dinner this evening.
After dinner this evening, we make the drive to Matlock Bath. Developed as one of the country's first tourist destinations, Matlock Bath in Derbyshire retains much of the character and interest that impressed early visitors. 1.5 miles south of the town of Matlock, Matlock Bath is set in the beautiful gorge of the river Derwent, with attractive riverside gardens, wooded hillsides, and rocky limestone crags. A popular tourist destination since the late 17th Century when the spa waters were discovered, its heyday was in Victorian times when it became known as "Little Switzerland" by the poet, Lord Byron.
We enjoy an evening watching the illuminations as they make their way down the River Derwent. During the 8-week season Matlock Bath Venetian Boat Builders' Association decorate themed models with an array of coloured lights.
Today enjoy a leisurely breakfast and then a visit to Bakewell. Perhaps best known for its unique and delicious Pudding, Bakewell has many more tempting treats to offer - ranging from shopping and specialist markets to relaxing strolls. Idyllically situated on the banks of the river Wye, the biggest town in the Peak District National Park's mellow stone buildings, medieval five-arched stone bridge and quaint courtyards are a magnet for painters, photographers, and sightseers alike.
After a leisurely breakfast we depart our hotel and make our journey home.
