Kent, in the Garden of England is a must, and on this short break there is an abundance of history and intrigue, in beautiful settings.
Scotney Castle | Bedgebury Castle
We depart from your selected pick-up point and travel to Kent arriving late afternoon you will have time to relax before dinner this evening.
This morning you can enjoy some leisure time, perhaps enjoy the hotel facilities, or a trip into Ashford, before returning for lunch at the hotel at 12:30pm. After lunch we travel to Scotney Castle a fortified manor house, Scotney Castle was built in c. 1378-80 by Roger Ashburnham. It was strategically sited where the road from Rye and Hastings crossed the valley of the Bewel. The remnants of Ashburnhams house include the massive round tower rising from the lake-like moat and a ruined gatehouse. An Elizabethan brick range adjoining the tower is all that survives of the 16th-century additions, and jagged walls with gaping windows mark a substantial 17th-century wing.
In 1836, Edward Hussey the creator of the gardens we see today consulted W.S. Gilpin, the noted landscape designer, to take advantage of the scenic potential of the site.
We then make our way to Bedgebury National Pinetum and Forest and enjoy the magical Christmas Lights Trail. Discover softly lit doves delicately balanced on branches, reed-like neon structures, sparkling tunnels of light and the Pinetum filled with all the colours of the rainbow as you walk under Liquid Sky.
Please note: The Trail takes approx. 1.5-2 hours to walk through.
After breakfast this morning we leave our hotel and make our journey home with comfort stops en route.
