This day excursion takes us to Carnforth Station and Leighton Hall.
During the two World Wars thousands of servicemen passed through Carnforth Station en route to duty overseas. In 1945 David Lean filmed his romantic classic Brief Encounter starring Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard. The Ministry of War Transport chose Carnforth as it was remote and safe from attack. Filming had to take place at night between 10pm and 6am so as not to interfere with daytime train operations.
The award-winning Heritage Centre opened in October 1993 and is housed in the beautifully restored historic buildings. The centre offers visitors a wealth of attractions, facilities and a fascinating range of exhibitions. Why not buy a coffee in the Brief Encounter Refreshment Room, which has been faithfully restored to resemble the set used in the film where Laura and Alec first met?
On arrival to Leighton Hall, you will enjoy a light lunch of soup and sandwiches, before exploring your surroundings. Waiting inside Leighton Hall is a step back in time as it still retains the atmosphere of a family home because the Gillow Reynolds family and friends still regularly use every room in the house. Each room from the Gothic Hall to the principal bedroom to the charming library has some interesting secrets to reveal or a tale to tell. Why is there a lock of James IIs hair in the Drawing room, and why is the table in the hall shaped like a daisy?
