The Best of the Peak District, what would you include? We believe that exploring the past is the best way to experience the Peak District, from beautiful Chatsworth House to the historical Tramway Village its the Peak District at its best.
Chatsworth House | Crich Tramway Village Museum | Cromford Mill | Birdswood Cruises | Tissington Hall
We depart from your home and travel to Derby arriving late afternoon you will have time to relax before dinner this evening.
Today we explore Chatsworth House. Set in the heart of the Peak District, Chatsworth House has over 30 rooms* to explore, from the magnificent Painted Hall, regal State Rooms, newly restored Sketch Galleries and beautiful Sculpture Gallery. Chatsworth has one of Europe's most significant art collections, what will you discover?
Located on the edge of the Peak District the Crich Tramway Village is an interactive museum. Home to the National Tramway Museum the working historic trams provide access to the attractions including a recreated period street, exhibitions, and a woodland walk. Well then make our way to Cromford Mill, described as the most important preserved textile heritage site in the world. Your tour guide takes you back in time to when Sir Richard Arkwright pioneered the worlds first successful water powered cotton spinning mill right here. Listen to the secrets of Sir Richard Arkwrights work and find out more about the revolutionary techniques he used to make it an international success. And to complete our day we journey on Birdswood Cruise, between Cromford Wharf and Leawood Pumphouse, which includes a cream tea. Although the navigation is a short section it passes through a variety of landscapes, from open meadows to self-seeded natural woodland. Youll see the water birds including moorhens, coots, little grebes and the usual ducks and swans. Facilities onboard include a toilet and hot and cold refreshments.
Today we visit Tissington Hall, built in 1609 by Francis FitzHerbert to replace the moated fortification that guarded the Norman Church that straddles the hill in the centre of the village. For over 400 years now the Hall has presided over the picturesque Estate Village at the south of the Peak District. We then visit Ashbourne for a stop before returning to our hotel.
After breakfast this morning we leave our hotel and make our journey home with comfort stops en route.
