South Shields | Durham | Newcastle | Lindisfarne | Lindisfarne Castle | Alnwick Castle & Gardens | Bamburgh
Northumberland is a magical place...
filled with ancient castles; hidden gardens; unspoilt beaches; rolling hills; rugged moorland; sweeping views; friendly little market towns and a cultural heritage all of its own.
We depart from your home and travel to Newcastle, arriving late afternoon at our hotel where tea and coffee will be served on arrival, you will have time to relax before dinner this evening.
This morning we head for the coast and South Shields, home of the late Catherine Cookson, continuing past Marsden Bay, Whitburn and Seaburn before turning inland across to the ancient and historic City of Durham, acclaimed as a World Heritage Site, and dominated by the magnificent Norman Cathedral and Castle, high above the River Wear. Late afternoon we return to Newcastle.
Today we have a free day to explore Newcastle from our city centre hotel. There is plenty to see and do including the famous shopping on Northumberland Street, the Great North Museum and renowned bars and restaurants.
Today we take the road north, past Blyth and Ashington, to Amble, Warkworth and historic Alnwick. We visit the magnificent Alnwick Castle, home to the Duke of Northumberland family dating back to 1309.
The castle has featured in several Harry Potter films and also Downton Abbey. There is much to see, including the sumptuous State Rooms. The beautifully landscaped Alnwick Garden has many unique features, sculptures, the infamous Poison Garden and one of the largest tree houses in the world.
This morning we first journey to Bamburgh, with its mighty castle on the beach, for a break, before heading across to Holy Island. Take a stroll along the beach or walk around the village, enjoy taking photos of the impressive Bamburgh Castle.
We then head across the causeway to Holy Island and the mysterious Lindisfarne Castle, a fascinating and atmospheric experience. Explore the castles rooms, from the cosy Dining Room and functional Kitchen to the ornate but practical wind indicator and imagine how its residents would have lived. We then return to our hotel.
NOTE: The crossing of the causeway to Holy Island is governed by tide times. It may be necessary to amend the excursions on this day.
Please Note: A good level of mobility is required for visiting Lindisfarne Castle. There are some uneven cobbled ramps and steep steps to be negotiated.
After breakfast we leave our hotel and make our journey home with comfort stops en route.
